Founded in the late 17th century, Sikar was the largest and the richest ?thikana? (Feudal State) under Jaipur. The town was modelled to resemble the city plan of Jaipur. The walled city has lofty buildings, a massive fort and an array of splendid havelis and temples ornate with beautiful frescoes. It is now one of the two districts of Shekhawati, the other being Jhunjhunu.
There is one haveli painted only in blue, suggestive of the typical Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. Other attractions include Sagarmal Sodhani Haveli, Madho Niwas-Kothi. Jubilee Hall & Fort are worth visiting. The fort and temples of Gopinath, Raghunath
and Madan Mohan with commendable frescoes are absolutely exemplary. Area closeby has Jeen Mata Temple and Harsh Nath Temple. The Harashnath Temple here is from the 10th century.

The Madan Mohan Temple here has paintings on its walls and dome. Similar is the case with the Govindji Temple. The walls of this temple have murals of wrestlers, a scene at a well and of the legendary love story of Dhola and Maru. The Jeen Mata Mandir is the venue for a fair held in April-May each year that attracts devotees in large numbers.
Location
The district is located in the north-eastern part of the state of Rajasthan. It is bound in the north by Jhunjhunu District, in the north-west by Churu district, in the south-west by Nagaur district and in the south-east by Jaipur district. It also touches Mahendragarhdistrict of Haryana on its north-east corner.
Climate:
Sikar has very hot summer with temperature touching 50 C. In winter, the temperature can be as low as -1 degree C. Winter months also see fog. The rainfall here is scanty. Bring light clothes for summer and heavy woollens for winter.

Khatu Shyamji Fair
Khatu Shyamji is famous for its Shyamji Temple. There is a steady stream of devotees visiting the temple round the year, but lakhs of them gather at the annual fair from Phalgun Sudi Dashmi to Dwadashi.

Lachhmangarh Fort
Built in the 19th century by Raja Lachhman Singh of Sikar, Lachhmangarh Fort is one of the most impressive forts in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. It is situated at Ramgarh in Sikar District. From the fort, one can have a magnificent view of Lachhmangarh town.

Jeen Mataji Temple
Jeen Mata temple is 30 Kms. away from Sikar. There is an ancient Temple dedicated to Jeen Mata (Goddess of Power). It is said that this temple was built a thousand years ago. Lacs of devotees congregate here every year in the month of Chaitra and Ashwin at the time of Navaratra fairs. There are a number of Dharamshalas to accommodate large number of visitors.
Legend has it that Jeen is the daughter of King Ghangh and an Apsara that he is believed to have loved and married. The Apsara fled the palace where she used to stay with her two children,
It was a ruler of the Chauhan dynasty who built the temple at that place. Goddess Jeen Mata is the Devi herself, the very embodiment of divine cosmic power. The deity is Mahishasura Mardini Durga. Here Jeen Mata is worshipped in her eight-armed form.
The temple has been constructed in the style of architecture adopted by Pratihar and Chauhan clans of Rajputs. There are twenty four pillars with panels of figures finely carved on them. The main temple has a very high Shikhar (pinnacle) in the midst . This is a unique temple from every point of view. It is believed that the Pandavas of Mahabharata during their exile from Hastinapur came to the thick forests of this place where they spent their period here incognito.
