Karauli, Located at 182 kms southwest of Jaipur, it was founded in 1348 and is best known for its Krishna Temples. The Fort, which was constructed over different period, is about 600 years old. The fort was the residence for the royal family until 1950 and is now occupied by monkeys and geese. The geese were used in the early days as warning system against any intruders. They still seem to be doing their duty.
The Bhanwar Vilas Palace, which is owned by the descendents of the royal family and resembles a large manor, is a hotel now. The rooms are comfortable and good meals are available. Karauli is best connected by bus or taxi from Jaipur

Karauli is a sylvan delight packed in a rural ambience. It was founded in 1348AD by one Raja Arjun Pal. In those days Karauli used to be the capital of a small state of the same name. Legend has it that the ruling family were descendants of Lord Krishna, one of the most loved god of Hindu mythology. As such they occupy the topmost rank among the Yaduvanshi Rajputs and their family history is rich with tales of valour and glory.
Karauli Attractions:
Today Karauli, famous for its pale red sandstone, is also known as a holy place. There are some old monuments you could see here, apart from exploring the rambling countryside and the game sanctuary. There are excellent opportunities for jeep safaris and boating too.Do make it a point to visit the local bazaar where you get good handicraft items, especially the colourful bangles of Karauli.
Kaila Devi is an important deity of Karauli with a temple dedicated to her. A big cattle fair is also held in the month of phalguna (February-March), where camels, horses and buffaloes go on sale.
Kaila Devi Temple:
Situated 23 km from Karauli is Kaila Devi Temple. The famous Kaila Devi Temple Fair takes place here in the Chaitra month which lasts for a fortnight. Goddess Lakshmi or Kaila Devi is worshiped during the festival and is attended by thousands of devotees.
Shri Kailadevi ji temple is situated around 23 km. away from Karauli town in district Karauli. It is believed that the temple came into existence around 1100 A.D. This temple is of Shri Kaila Devi ji which is reigning diety of millions of people of eastern Rajasthan, M.P. and U.P. Around 60 lacs pilgrims flock to this place every year. This temple is regarded as one of the 9 Shakti peeths of goddess Durga.
In chaitra Navratra virtually the entire area of eastern Rajasthan, western U.P. and western M.P. congregate at the feet of goddess . 1000 of buses, cars and other vehicles bring these people here.
Lacs of devotees come on foot also. A real sea of humanity engulfs the surrounding area for around 15 days. Such a large assemblage of devotees require tremendous efforts for provision and maintenance of basic civic amenities and services.
Right in front of the Kaila Devi temple is another minor temple dedicated to Bhairon. Another interesting shrine right in the courtyard is that of Lord Hanuman (The Monkey God). Interesting because the God is called Languriya (slang for monkey).
Kaila Devi(Goddess) Temple is located on the banks of the Kalisil river in Karauli district. The temple is devoted to the tutelary deity, goddess Kaila, of the erstwhile princely rulers of the Karauli state. It is marble structures with a large courtyard of a checkered floor.

The Bhanwar Vilas Palace was constructed to provide a royal residence to Maharaj Ganesh Pal, the ruler of Karauli. The work was completed in late 1930s. The building was constructed as per the taste of the ruler and his preference for colonial exteriors and traditional Rajasthani interior is clearly visible.
The external contours are of stark colonial style and the craftily carved interiors and artistically furnished interior furniture and decorations are a must see.The furniture appears to be as good as new even after almost 80 years of existence and the interiors are still spic and span speaking about the passion with which they have been maintained.
