Dholpur also called Dhaulpur is located in the Dholpur district of Rajasthan. It is the administrative seat of the Dholpur district. Bharatpur, the administrative headquarters of the Bharatpur district is located at a distance of 113 km. from Dholpur. Agra is located 60km. north of Dholpur and Delhi is located at a distance of 230km.

This old historic city of Dholpur was initially named "Dhawalpuri" after the ruler Dhawal Deo who built the city at a site, little south of the present city. Later people started calling it Dholpur.
In 846 AD, a Chauhan family ruled it, apparently as a feudatory of Kannauj. Dholpur was a small state but it had a very turbulent history. Its strategic location on the main route from Kabul and Delhi to Deccan and its proximity to cities like Gwalior, Agra and Bayana attracted attention of almost all-powerful kings and rulers of Delhi and Agra.
Though the rulers of Dholpur resisted the invasions with valor, the invading forces and suffered plunder and devastation time and again, occupied it. Sikander Lodi attacked and occupied Dholpur in 1501 AD. His forces plundered the city and even uprooted all the gardens that shaded Dholpur. Babar again invaded it in 1526 AD.

Mach Kund
Located 8 kms away from Dholpur, Machkund is a revered Hindu site. It was named after Raja Muchchhkund the 24th king of the Suryavanshi Dynasty (the solar race) who is believed to have reigned nineteen generations before Lord Ram. According to legend Raja Muchkund, was sleeping here when a demon Kaal Yaman while pursuing Lord Krishna, accidentally woke him up.
That was thousands of years ago, and it’s really surprising how the legend has survived. The place bursts forth with life once a year when it becomes a pilgrim site. There are also the ruins of an ancient fort (1286) built by one Firoz Shah.
Picturesque and ancient scared place Muchkund is about 8 kms. from the town of Dholpur. The place is named after Raja Muchkund, the twenty fourth King of the Suryavanshi dynasty (the solar race) is said to have reigned nineteen generations before Lord Ram.
Van Vihar and RamSagar Wildlife Sanctuary:
Van Vihar and Ramsagar, old wildlife reserves of the rulers of Dholpur spread over an area of 59.86. sq. kms, were notified as wildlife sanctuaries by the Rajasthan Government in 1955 AD. Van Vihar is about 18 kms from Dholpur and Ramsagar is another 18 kms from Van Vihar.
As a matter of fact, these are actually two separate wildlife sanctuaries. Van Vihar, located on Vindhyan plateau, supports a rather open stunted growth of Dhok and Khair trees. It is inhabited by animals like Sambhar, Blue Bull, Chital, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, Hyena and Leopard. Tigers were present in the area till the end of the 1960's.
It is said that Maharaj Udaibhan Singh of Dholpur had a great liking for the wild animals of Van Vihar. He used to hand feed not only the deer and antelopes in the reserve but also animals like, jackals, foxes and birds. There is an old forest rest house in Van Vihar which was initially built by the rulers of Dholpur.
Talab –e- Shahi Lake:
Talab Shahi, Just 40 kms from Dholpur is yet another scenic and historic lake known as Talab-e-shahi.Both the lake and the palace were constructed in 1617 AD. They were considered as the shooting lodge for Price Shahjahan. As a memorial, Talab- E- Shahi was made by the rulers of Dholpur.
Number of migratory lakes used to visit this lake. Migratory fowls like Pintals, shoveller, redcrested pochard, common pochard, tufted duck, common teal, garganery teal.
Historic and picturesque lake, Talab Shahi, is about 40 kms. form Dholpur. The lake and the palace were built in 1617 A.D. as a shooting lodge for Prince Shahlahan. Later on it was maintained by the rulers of Dholpur. The lake attracts a large number of winter migratory fowls like pintail, shoveller, red crested pochard, comnion pochard, tufted duck, common teal, garganey teal, wigeon anti gadwall.
How To Reach Dholpur
Dholpur is easily accessible from Agra, Gwalior, Jaipur and Delhi. National Highway 3 (NH3) connects Dholpur to Agra and Gwalior.
