Barmer district is situated in the western part of Rajasthan and forms part of the Thar desert. It is surrounded by Jaisalmer in the north, Jalore in the south, Pali and Jodhpur in the east and Pakistan in the west. Barmer is the headquarter of the district, which is also the principal town.
The district has 3 municipalities, 8 panchayat samitis, 225 gram panchayats, 1,640 revenue villages and 853 inhabited villages. Barmer is situated at a distance of 224km from Jodhpur on the Luni-Munabao section of the Northern Railways.
Located atop a hill as so many of the cities of western Rajasthan are, it houses the remains of an old fort called Garh right on its peak. The name Barmer is derived from the ruler Bahada Rao or Bar Rao who is said to have founded the town in the 13th century. Initially called ‘Bahada-mer’ it was later shortened to Barmer.

The district is divided into two sub-divisions viz., Barmer and Balotra.To the immediate west of the city lie the remains of Juna or Juna Barmer and to the south are the ruins of three Jain temples. There is an inscription dated 1295AD on one of the pillars of the hall of the largest temple at Juna. This mentions a Maharajakula Sri Samanta Sinha Deva ruling Barmer at the time.

There are three Jain temples, an inscription of 1295 AD and a massive pillar in the hall of the largest temple of Maharaja Kula Sri Samanta Sinha Deva, a ruler of Barmer, which are worth visiting.
Jasol
Jasol, Once a principal state of Mallani, this ancient village has got its name from the descendants of a Rathore sub-clan. A Jain temple and a Hindu temple are worth visiting. The Hindu temple is ornamented with fine sculptures, which were brought from a Jain temple of Lord Mahavir.

Kiradu Temple
Kiradu Ancient Temples lie at a distance of 39 km from Barmer city and 38 km from hotel in Hathma village.You find an inscription here dating back to 1161AD indicating that the place was once called Kiratkoop and had once been the capital of the Panwara dynasty. The Panwaras owed their allegiance to the rulers of Gujarat at that time.
The Kiradu temples are a group of five temples and are grouped as ancient temples, an important site from the archaeological point of view. The largest and the most impressive amongst them is the Someshvara Temple.
The temple of Somesvara is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The sanctum of this temple is also five-faceted. The plinth has moldings and jadyakumbha or inverted cymarecta. The figurative bands or the tharas featuring elephants, horses and human beings are notable.

The variation in temperature in various seasons is quite high. In summers the temperature soars to 46 °C to 48 °C. In winters it drops to 5 °C (41 °F). Primarily Barmer district is a desert where average rainfall in a year is 277 mm. However, extreme rainfall of 549 mm rain between August 16 and August 25, 2006 left many dead and huge losses. As many as 20 new lakes formed, and 6 covered an area of over 10 km².
