West Godavari District is one of the 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. Eluru, is the district headquarter. The district had a population of 3,803,517 of which 9.74% were urban as of 2001.
The district is in the delta region of the Krishna and Godavari rivers. Khammam District lies to the north
West Godavari District has a richly cultivated land, divided into Delta and uplands. In Delta, coconut, lemon, rice farming and aquaculture is practiced. In uplands oil palm, tobacco, cotton, sugar cane, corn, cashew, mango, banana, and other fruit farming is practiced Other important places in the district are Akividu, Achanta, Bhimavaram, Narsapur, Palakollu, Kovvur, Nidadavole, Tallapudi, Tanuku, Tadepalligudem, Attili, Jangareddigudem, Koyyalagudem, Polavaram and Pappikondallu.

Cotton barrage built on River Godavari at Dhavaleswaram channelling two canals, in which one canal is passing through West Godavari and making the soil fertile. In the coastal belt of the district, a large portion of prawns and fish is exported to Japan, and the United States. Bhimavaram is a hub for Prawns export.

Kolleru Lake
Kolleru Lake is the largest freshwater lake. Between Krishna and Godavari delta Kolleru is located. Spanning into two districts - Krishna and West Godavari Kolleru is the good sightseeing. The lake serves as a natural flood-balancing reservoir for these two rivers. The lake is fed directly by water from the seasonal Budameru and Tammileru lakes,
The lake was an important habitat for an estimated 20 million resident and migratory birds, including the Grey or Spot-billed Pelican. The lake was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in November 1999 under India's Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972,
Rich in flora and fauna, it attracts migratory birds from northern Asia and Eastern Europe between the months of October and March.
Perupalem Beach
The beach is famous for its scenic beauty and the coastline that offers a pleasurable retreat to its visitors. The drive to Perupalem and state highway is very scenic with beautiful vast spread, green paddy fields separated with lines of coconut trees.
The town of Narasapur is well known for its historic background and the old buildings of the British era that still lay erected in the town. The town is a part of the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The town has other tourist attractions like the temple dedicated to Sri Adikesava Embarmannar Swamy and the Lakshmi Narayana Temple at Antarvadi situated at a distance of 3 kilometers from the town
The town specializes in lace weaving and has an industry that exports its crafts to foreign countries as well. The Perupalem Beach is however the crowning glory of the town.
Sri Someshwara Janardhana swamy Gunupudi Bhimavaram
Gunupudi Bheemavaram is well known for the temple Soma Rama which is considered as one of the Pancharama temples. The temple here is called Sri Someshwara Janardhana swamy. Tributary of Godavari called Vasishta Godavari meeting the sea called Antarvedi.
The local people say that couple getting married at this Pancharama place have a peaceful understanding life.
Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Sri Someswara Janardhana swamy considered as one of the Pancharama Kshetras is situated here. The main contribution for temple construction was made by the King Chalukya Bheema during 4th century. The Shiva lingam is called someshwara as it is believed that this lingam has been installed by Lord Chandra.
Kolleru Bird Sanctuary
Kolleru Lake is one of the largest fresh water lakes in India with a variety of wildlife that resides inside and around it. Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary is located near the Kolleru Fresh Water Lake located at the deltaic region of the Krishna and the Godavari district. Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary got its name from the Kolleru lake of Andhra Pradesh, which is very popular throughout India as it is the largest fresh water lakes.
The Kolleru lake is connected to the Krishna and Godavari river systems by 30 inflowing drains and channels. The area in the vicinity of the Kolleru Fresh Water Lake is considered suitable habitats for birds and hence the Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary is situated there.
Varieties of birds like Widgeons, Gadwalls,
Cormorants and Avocets are the common variety of birds there. Different types of water fowls are also found in the Kolleru Lake. The water tank known as Muthyraju Tank is located near the same region. The best season to visit here is between Novembers to March. The ecosystem of the Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary supports habitat for over 50,000 resident and migratory birds, including the Grey or Spot-billed Pelican Numerous birds species such as Open Bill Storks, Painted Storks, Glossy Ibises, White Ibises, Teals, Pintails, Shovellers, Red-Crested Pochards, Blackwinged Stilts, Avocets, Common Redshanks, Wigeons, Gadwalls and Cormorants Widgeons are considered common in the sanctuary.
Climate : The climate of the region is characterized by dry, hot, and humid weather. Maximum temperature shoots up to 45 degree celsius in summer and the minimum temperature dips down to 14 degree celsius in winter during the period between December and January.The region mostly has a tropical climate like the rest of the Coastal Andhra region. The summers (March-June) are very hot and humid with practically non-existent winters.
Best time to visit : The period between November to March is considered the best time to observe these itinerant birds in the sanctuary Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary is 60 km away from Vijayawada, 15-km from Eluru, 1.5-km from Kaikaluru town
