Nallagonda District is a district in Andhra Pradesh. It has a population of 3,247,982 of which 13.32% is urban as of 2001.[1] Its name is derived from two Telugu words Nalla (Black) & Konda (Hills) i.e. Black Hills[2].Nalgonda was earlier referred to as Neelagiri, the name given by some rajput rulers and the name was changed to Nallagonda.
Nalgonda District is located between two hills and lies at the geographic center of Andhra Pradesh. In the earlier centuries the Kakatiyas, Satavahanas, and the Mughals ruled over this place.
On the northern hill stands Shah Latif's tomb and on the southern hill there is a strong fort built by the Kakatiya kings, which are of great historical importance. There are many monuments, forts and temples,

Formerly, it was known as Nilagiri which means ‘blue hill’ but subsequently came to be known as Nalgonda after its conquest by Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah. which have survived the ravages of time and human vandalism, proclaiming the glorious past of the place.

Bhongir Fort
Bhongir fort was built on an isolated rock by the western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI and was thus named after him as Tribhuvanagiri. This name gradually became Bhuvanagiri and subsequently Bhongir. At the foot of the fortified rocks 609.6 meters above the sea level stands the town of Bhongir.
The splendid historical fort with the awe-inspiring rock and the aesthetically fortified courts which have stood the ravages of time stir the imagination of the tourists.
Deverakonda Fort
Once upon a time a formidable stronghold of the Recherla Chiefs this fort now stands amidst ruins.A place worth visiting by antiguity lovers it is no more than of archaeological interest.The prosperous kingdom of Devarakonda was established by the “Padma Nayaka Veluma Rajas” choosing the Devarakonda fortress as the autonomously ruled palace and they reigned supreme from 1287 to 1482 A.D. with much pomp and glory. The Second Maada Naidu is the eight kings of these Padma Nayaka lineages.
Pillalamarri
Pillamarri is a village with a population of about 3,733. It is situated at a latitude of 17* 12'N and longitude of 79* 32'E. Historically significant this ancient village consists of many splendid temples maintained by State Government. The temples stand testimony to the architectural style of the Kakatiya period. The intricately carved stone pillars add grandeur to these archaeologically significant temples.
Trescoes and inscriptions tell the tales of the rulers of the Kakatiya dynasty. There is a Kannada, Telugu inscription dated S. 1130 (A.D 1208) on a stone referring to king Ganapati. Another inscription of S.1117 (A.D 1195) found on a stone in the temple mentions the rule of Rudradeva. Ancient coins have also been discovered at this place. Pillalamarri, being the birth place of the famous Telugu poet Pillamarri Pina Virabhadrudu.
Major Attraction Around The Dam
The Lake :
The lake near the dam is the third largest artificial lake in the world. It is located 4-km away from the dam. This dam provides some exotic views of the outstandingly beautiful landscape. Here you can also see an idol of Lord Nagarjuna, placed on a tower, very near to the dam.
Other Attractions
Apart form the lake, there are many other attractions around the Nagarjuna Sagar like Ethipothala waterfalls, and the densely forested Srisailam Wildlife Reserve. There is also the famous Buddhist relics and an exquisite museum, located just a 20-minute ride away by a motorboat across the river Krishna.
CLIMATE
The region experiences hot and dry summer throughout the year except during the South West Monsoon season. The year may broadly be divided into four seasons. It experiences cold season from December to Mid February, summer season from Mid February to first week of June. South West monsoon season from June to September and retreating monsoon or the past monsoon season during October to November.
TEMPERATURE
Cold season extending from December to February is followed by summer when both day and night temperatures increase sharply. May being the hottest month, the mean daily maximum temperature is about 40*C (104.0*F) and the mean daily minimum is about 28*C (82.4*F) sometimes the day temperature crosses 44*C during this period. On some days, afternoon thundershowers come as a blessing and though temporarily they bring relief from the oppressive summer heat.
