It is also possible to get to Port Blair by ship. Services to and from Chennai can be reasonably relied upon to leave in each direction once a week. However once the tourists get to the islands, thirty day permits are obtainable on arrival in Port Blair. Permits are usually extendable for fifteen days but the authorities sometimes only allow staying in Port Blair for that period.
 
Port Blair has two jetties:

First stop from Port Blair is generally Viper Island, named after a 19th century merchant vessel that ran aground on it during the early years of the colony. Lying a short way off Haddo Wharf, it served as an isolation zone for the main prison, where escapees and convicts were sent to be punished. Whipping posts and crumbling walls, reached from the jetty via a winding brick path, remain, as relics of a torture area, Henry Corbyns "Andaman Home" - a prison camp created with the intention of "civilizing" the local tribes people.

 
Nature Tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 
Thickly covered by deep green tropical forest, the archipelago supports a profusion of wildlife, including some extremely rare species of bird but the principal attraction for tourists lies offshore, around the pristine reefs ringing most of the islands. Filled with colourful fish and kaleidoscopic corals.
 
Foreign tourists are only permitted to visit certain parts of the Andaman group, separated by the deep Ten Degree Channel from the Nicobar Islands. The point of arrival for boats and planes is South Andaman, where the predominantly Tamil and Bengali community in the small but busy capital, Port Blair.
 
This place accounts for almost half the total population. Permits, obtainable on arrival by both sea and air, are granted for a stay of one month. The most beautiful beaches and coral reefs are found on outlying islands.
 
From Port Blair the tourists can check out places of interest, such as, the Botanical Gardens, Burmah Nullah, the Wimberlygunj lumbering centres, in the jungle and the zoo on Haddo Promontoiy.

Ross Island
 
Ross Island, the erstwhile capital of Port Blair during the British regime, is a tiny island standing as guard to Port Blair harbour. The island presently houses the ruins of old buildings like Ballroom, Chief Commissioner’s House, Govt. House, Church, Hospital, Bakery, Press, Swimming Pool and Troop Barracks, all in dilapidated condition, reminiscent of the old British regime.
 
Ever since Dr. James Pattison Walker arrived in Port Blair aboard the East India Company’s steam frigate ‘Senuramis’ on 10th March 1858, this island remained under British occupation till 1942. From 1942 to 1945, the island was under the occupation of Japanese. However, the allies reoccupied the island in 1945 and later abandoned it.
 
Viper Island
 

The tiny, serene, beautiful island of Viper witnessed the untold sufferings the freedom fighters had to undergo. Dangerous convicts found guilty of violating the rules of the Penal Settlement, were put in fetters and were forced to work with their fetters on in this island. Freedom fighters like Nanigopal and Nandlal Pulindas, who had resorted to hunger strike at the Cellular Jail, were imprisoned at Viper Island.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands have an unique culture, where all religions, languages, ethnic groups live in total peace and harmony and hence it is rightly called Mini India. Port Blair has a cosmopolitan character where people of all walks of life live together in peace and tranquility. All major festivals are celebrated with equal zeal and fervour and attended by all religious groups. Certain fairs and festivals, which are special to these islands, are:
 
Island Tourism Festival A fortnight long festival organized by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration every year (December - January) gives a festive look to the Islands. Govt. agencies and private entrepreneurs from the islands and Mainland India also attend the exhibition organized during the festival. The exhibition highlights the developmental aspects of these islands. Cultural troupes and artistes of national and international fame are invited to perform during the festival apart from performances by the talents of these islands including tribals.
 
This festival is celebrated every year from December to January. It is a fortnight long festival. People staying all over the islands attend the exhibition organized during the festival.
