the Grand Vitara merrily chugging up in third gear where other SUVs would struggle in second. On our off-road course, the transfer box never really needed to be shifted into low. However, the big, heavy Vitara, with its aggressively tuned 2.7-litre engine glugs heavily, barely making the 6.5kpl figure in the city and only managing 8.7kpl on the highway.
Safety
The vehicle incorporates safety features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Dual Airbags. Doors are equipped with side-impact beams. The sturdy ladder frame is boxed and is designed with built-in crumple zones at the front and the rear. In the event of a frontal or rear collision, the crumple zones act like buffers, deforming in a progressive manner to absorb and dissipate impact energy. This helps in reducing the overall crash forces acting upon the occupants. The doors are equipped with side impact beams to take care of side impact.
