Warangal Airport is located at Warangal in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The airport is to be reopened as of December 2007, and the AAI is expected to complete upgrades to the airport within two years. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has discussed airport connectivity, with the hopes of facilitating industrial and tourist development.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials recently visited the airport to study various aspects of the plan to develop it, Mr R.K. Singla, Director of Hyderabad Airport, told Business Line.The major hurdle for the airport was the concessional agreement between the Government and GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) that doesn’t allow any new airport to come up within a radius of 150 km of the upcoming Shamshabad airport being developed by GHIAL.
The Warangal airport, however, falls beyond the 150-km mark from the Shamshadbad airport, signalling no violation of the agreement. The Government plans to develop airports in smaller towns such as Kadapa.As part of this, it signed a memorandum of understanding with AAI early this year to develop the Vijayawada and Rajahmundry airports. The AAI has proposed to spend Rs 100 crore on the projects.
